Dear Teething Runny
Have you thought about packing your hospital bag yet? If not, you might want to start collecting some bits and bobs together now. Packing your bag will help you feel in control and ready for that dash to the hospital. Have your bag ready at least a month before your due date – just in case!

What should I pack in my hospital bag?
Having the perfectly packed bag to help get you through the birth in hospital is something that lots of mums ask about. You’ll want to be prepared during labour and you’ll need things for your new baby afterwards, but you don’t have to take too much. Your stay should be quite short and, if you do need extra, friends or family can get things for you.

The first stage of labour can be long, so bring something to help keep yourself entertained, such as a magazine or mp3 player. A cosy, clean dressing gown or nightie to wear after the birth will help you to feel more comfortable too.

It’s a good idea to take some loose, comfy clothes to go home in too and flat shoes. Other things to pack include lip balm, a hair band (if you’ve got long hair), socks, snacks like dried fruit or cereal bars, maxi sanitary pads, unscented toiletries, and a camera. As for your new baby, they’ll need nappies, a blanket, socks, vest and an outfit that goes on easily and doesn’t need to be tugged over their head.

Because there’s so much to remember, we’ve prepared a hospital bag checklist you can download and tick off as you pack.

Health and nutrition tip
One of the very first things you’re going to need to do in hospital once your baby is born is feed them, so it’s worth preparing in advance and packing anything you need in your bag too. If you’re planning to breastfeed, you may want to take breast pads and a good nursing bra. If you’re planning to bottlefeed or want to have the option, check whether you need to take baby milk and feeding equipment with you – some maternity units don’t have baby milk or they may not use the same brand as you have chosen to use.

When your baby is awake they’re doing lots of things that a newborn baby would do, like grasping at their feet and sucking their thumb.

Important notice

Breastfeeding is best for babies and provides many benefits. It is important that, in preparation for and during breastfeeding, you eat a healthy, balanced diet. Combined breast and bottle feeding in the first weeks of life may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk, and reversing the decision not to breastfeed is difficult. The social and financial implications of using an infant milk should be considered. Improper use of an infant milk or inappropriate foods or feeding methods may present a health hazard. If you use an infant milk, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use carefully – failure to follow the instructions may make your baby ill. Always consult your doctor, midwife or health visitor for advice about feeding your baby.
