Bigger bumps and smaller appetites

Dear Teething Runny
Lots of mums tell me in their third trimester that, even when they’re really hungry, they very quickly feel full up once they’ve started eating. It’s no wonder – with your growing baby inside, there’s not much room left! To avoid feeling uncomfortably full, just try eating little and often. If you have any questions about your pregnancy diet or if there’s anything else on your mind, please get in touch.

I can't finish off my meals any more. Surely I'm supposed to be eating extra now?
If you feel full easily, it’s likely to be because your uterus is taking up all the room around your middle and is probably squashing your stomach a bit. Rather than having three full meals, have several smaller healthy meals and snacks throughout the day instead. Try a simple shake of banana whizzed up with milk, a bowl of porridge with fruit, wholemeal toast with beans or cheese, vegetable soup, or just fruit on its own.

And don’t worry that you’re not eating enough, ‘eating for two’ is actually a bit of a myth. You only need to increase your calorie intake by around 200 calories a day in the last trimester, depending on your build. Whatever you choose to eat, make sure it’s healthy and nutritious because your baby will be getting their nutrients directly from you.

Health and nutrition tip
If you feel like you can’t breathe easily because your bump is getting bigger, stand tall with your chest lifted. Some mums also find that if they get down on all fours, in a crawling position, it moves the weight and makes breathing easier.

Now your baby’s immune system is getting stronger. When they’re born in a month or so, about two-thirds of their immune system is developed.
