Have you written a birth plan yet?

Dear Teething Runny
How are you getting on at the moment? One of the things you could do now is think about a birth plan. This is your chance to give an indication of what you’d like to happen when the big day arrives. But leave a little flexibility – just in case your baby has other ideas! If you need any help figuring out your birth plan, we can always give you a hand.

How do I write a birth plan and what happens if I change my mind?
You may have a good idea of how you would like your birth to be managed and how you would like to be treated during labour. Your birth plan lets your midwife, birth partner and the maternity staff know about your ideal choices and the way you want to have your baby. After all, it may be difficult for you to communicate these choices on the day! But labour can change from second to second, so it’s worth keeping your plans flexible. You can change your mind at any time – even during the birth.

Before you write your plan, it’s a good idea to chat to your midwife. Consider details such as who your birth partner will be, what position you would like to give birth in, your preferred method of pain relief, and whether you would like skin-to-skin contact with your baby afterwards.

Health and nutrition tip
If your legs are swollen with all the water retention, try sitting with your feet elevated above your knees as this will help the blood to circulate and the fluid to drain away. I’d avoid sitting with your legs crossed too, and try exercising your ankles by moving your feet round and round in a circular motion. Drinking lots of water and eating healthily can also help to keep any puffiness down. Garlic, raw onions and apples are thought to be particularly effective, and try to avoid salty foods which can dehydrate you.

The parts of your baby’s brain responsible for memory are starting to develop now. One study found that babies who were played the theme tune to a popular soap while in the womb responded to it after birth!
