Can skin really hold all this bump in?!

Dear Teething Runny
As your skin stretches over your expanding tum, you might wonder whether, like a balloon, you might eventually pop! Let me reassure you that I’ve never seen that happen to anyone yet. Keeping your bump well-moisturised will help reduce stretch marks, as well as helping with any itchiness you might feel as your bump grows.

Is it normal for my skin to be stretched so thinly?
Lots of mums-to-be at this stage say that they’re concerned about how thin and fragile they feel their skin is. As your tummy gets larger, the skin becomes stretched very tight like a drum. And as your pregnancy progresses, you may also be able to see parts of your baby’s outline through the thin skin which is very exciting but a bit strange at the same time.

If itching or stretch marks are bothering you, rubbing in some cocoa butter can offer some relief. Eating healthily, drinking plenty of water, gentle exercise and gaining your weight slowly and steadily can help minimise your stretch marks. Depending on your skin tone, stretch marks can appear red or brown. The good news is they should fade a few months after giving birth and eventually turn silvery white and more like your own skin colour.

Health and nutrition tip
Tiredness in the latter stages of pregnancy can be a problem, but there are a few things you can do to beat fatigue:
  • Try and stick to a healthy balanced diet to keep your immunity levels high.
  • Iron-rich foods, like leafy green veg, can boost your energy too.
  • Try not to rely on sugary food to get you through the day.
  • Take 20 minutes 'time out' mid morning and mid afternoon to recharge your batteries.

Your baby now weighs 2lb 5oz or thereabouts. During the third trimester you can expect them to triple in weight.
