Coping with mood swings during pregnancy

With no control over raging hormones and weeks of growing discomfort and lack of sleep, it's no wonder lots of mums-to-be have moments when they feel a bit down. So don't feel guilty if you don’t always feel as glowing as you think you should.

If you're irritable, try and take some time out and do something enjoyable that will take your mind off things. Watch your favourite film, treat yourself to a facial or have a relaxing bubble bath.

And you know what they say about a trouble shared. Simply talking to your partner, family or friends can help reassure you and make you feel better. Your mood swings will affect those closest to you, so sharing your feelings will also help them understand you better.

Health and nutrition tip
What you eat doesn’t just affect your body – it can also affect how you feel. Opt for foods that can give your mood a natural and healthy lift. Foods like turkey, chicken, bananas, and avocados are all great – they contain natural chemicals and vitamins which boost your body’s level of serotonin, helping to keep you in a good mood. So try rustling up a turkey stir-fry or a banana smoothie!

Your baby might just be able to recognise your partner’s voice by now, and you might like to play soothing music to them.
