Dear Ronak,

Any day now, if she hasn't already, your baby will experience the first appearance of a tiny white tooth. Some babies sail through the teething process and are showing off their first teeth before you know it, but for others it can be a more uncomfortable time.

Teething is the natural process in which the baby teeth emerge through the gums and become visible in the mouth. On average, a baby will have around ten teeth by the age of one.

  • Pain and discomfort
  • Inflammation and tenderness of the gum
  • Increased drooling, biting, gum-rubbing
    and sucking
  • Wakefulness and disturbed sleep
  • Slightly raised temperature, but not more
    than 38°C.

  • Infant analgesics - A pain relief medicine designed especially for babies, such as Nurofen for Children*, can be used for babies who are three months or more** . It has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to relieve the pain associated with teething and bring down a raised temperature. It starts to work in just 15 minutes to reduce a temperature and lasts up to 8 hours.
  • Rubbing their gums - Lightly massaging your baby's gum with a clean finger can be soothing and help alleviate some of their discomfort. You can do this while applying a topical teething gel like bonjela Teething Gel which has the added benefit of helping to provide relief afterwards too. (Always read the label).
  • Teething rings - Teething babies love to chew and bite - on anything!
