Is your baby fussy about food?

Dear Teething Runny
It’s normal for everyone – not just babies – to have their own particular favourites when it comes to food. Lots of adults can be reluctant to try new things, so don’t be surprised if it takes a while for your baby to accept a new taste or texture! If you’re really stuck for ideas on how to encourage your baby to eat, our team of baby feeding advisors is here to help.

Tips for fussy eaters

Almost all babies go through a fussy-eating phase, so don’t worry too much if it happens to your baby. However, don’t give up on introducing your baby to different foods − it can take around 15 goes before they accept a new taste!

There are lots of ways to encourage your baby to eat more of a variety of foods. Why not make feeding fun by serving their food in shapes or faces on the plate? Eating together so you can lead by example and show your baby that you’re enjoying your food (try a bit yourself and make ‘yummy’ noises!) can be encouraging for them, too. And remember to offer small portions of different tastes at mealtimes, so if they don’t like one thing, they can try something else. If your baby spits food out, be patient and try again another day – perhaps mixed in with a little of their favourite food.

Although you should try and get your baby used to new tastes, there are some foods that you shouldn’t introduce until they’re older. Honey is one of them, as it can contain tiny spores that cause food poisoning, so leave this out of their diet until they’re at least a year old. If your family has a history of allergies, peanuts or food containing peanuts are also best avoided until 3 years of age.

You & your baby this month
By now, your baby will probably be into everything, but don’t worry if they don’t seem interested in crawling.
