Getting back into shape

Your baby - 8 weeks
Incorrect age? Update
your baby's birth date
Dear Teething Runny
Creating and bringing a new life into the world is no mean feat! Having settled in and established some routines, you may now be thinking it’s time to give yourself some attention and try to get your old body back. But getting fit doesn’t mean rushing down to join a gym! Take it slowly and lose your pregnancy pounds safely.

How can I get my old figure back?!

The best way to get back into shape is with a combination of healthy eating and exercise, but check with your doctor first to make sure your body is ready for exercising. If you’ve had a caesarean, you shouldn’t exercise until at least 12 weeks after the birth.

Once you’ve got the all-clear, take things slowly. Walking is probably the best exercise to try first, especially as you can take your baby along for the ride too. Don’t push yourself - start at a gentle pace and gradually increase the speed over the next few sessions.

And don’t forget swimming – it’s a great activity that you can try together, and a nice, gentle way to ease you back into things. If you want to do a few lengths on your own, lots of leisure centres have crèche services, so check with your local pool.

As for your diet, make sure you get the right nutrients and don’t be too hasty to cut calories, especially while breastfeeding.  Eat a healthy, balanced diet and keep your fat intake down by choosing low-fat, high fibre foods and swapping biscuits for fresh fruit.

Did you know it’s estimated that babies are likely to get 8–10 colds in their first two years? To ease congestion, try to keep your baby’s nose clear and put a small pillow under the head of their mattress so that they sleep at a slight angle. You could also try sitting with them in a steamy bathroom to help them breathe more easily.

How's your baby doing this month?
Your 2 month old baby’s body is continuing to straighten out. Soon they’ll be able to lift their head and hold it for a few moments while they’re lying flat on their tummy.

Important Notice

Breastfeeding is best for babies and provides many benefits. It is important that, in preparation for and during breastfeeding, you eat a healthy, balanced diet. Combined breast and bottle feeding in the first weeks of life may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk, and reversing the decision not to breastfeed is difficult. The social and financial implications of using an infant milk should be considered. Improper use of an infant milk or inappropriate foods or feeding methods may present a health hazard. If you use an infant milk, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use carefully – failure to follow the instructions may make your baby ill. Always consult your doctor, midwife or health visitor for advice about feeding your baby.
